Rec boat in bays?

Try paying attention
The original question was about going out around the Thimbles. Totally wrong for the 8 to 10 ft no-bulkhead rec boat.

Rip 12
I totally agree with everything written by other posters. I do know about the Rip 12. I tried one in Martha’s Vineyard on a lark. I was very pleasantly surprised by how it behaved (especially as I thought of it as a tub before I started). My memory is that it was a good wind day, too, with some chop. One more word: comparing boats is endlessly fascinating, but I think a good, appropriate,well-balanced, correctly sized paddle is so important.

Thimbles Islands input
Hi Xguerillax

I paddle the Thimbles Islands often.

Matter a fact will be there on Saturday.

All of the groups I paddle with:

say 14 ft boat min

two bulkheads

and have taken rescue classes (wet exit skills)

Thimbles Islands can get rough without notice.

I Think the Pine Barrens would be a better choice for starting out.

No, easy to lose track
But if you could others could as well.

thanks again
I really appreciate all the feedback and advice from everyone. We were supposed to go away all week end but dog got sick so just day trips. Everyone was very helpful, We decided to just head up to redbank for the day. hope to get up to Conn. to paddle soon.

Round Valley
If you’re doing day trips Round Valley Reservoir is close to you and a great place to paddle as long as it isn’t windy. It can get pretty rough in a breeze. Anything over 15mph forget it.

Ditto…
…I’m not a fan of Round Valley, it’s been windy and very choppy every time I’ve tried it. However, Spruce Run Reservoir is close by, nearer PA and a lot more appropriate for rec boats in my opinion.

I also enjoyed Lake Nockamixon the one time I went there, it’s in Buck’s County near the NJ border.

Get yourself some flotation bags and
Put some attachment points in your boats so they can be secured

Spruce Run
I agree that Spruce Run is a much better place to paddle than Round Valley. I have sailed and been scuba diving in both quite a lot and while the latter is basically just a big round bowl of water and is quite prone to crosswinds, Spruce Run has many “fingers” of water and is more interesting.

I believe Round Valley also requires that you have an NJ fishing license to launch there.

Blue Marsh
Blue Marsh Lake near Reading would be doable for you.

A couple of rec boat friendly

What makes the Thimbles a challenge is the high amount of boat traffic
