People learning wet exits on a breezy day often get a valuable auxiliary lesson. Almost no one trying a wet exit for the first time remembers to hold on to the boat or paddle. They are concentrating on getting out of the boat. It’s amazing how fast a boat will blow away, and you can’t swim fast enough to catch it.
Without a boat and the PFD strapped on to it, they are in deep trouble if not near shore, especially solo. If they are with only one other person, that person needs to stay with them and not go after the boat. With any kind of waves, likely when there is a capsize, it can be incredibly difficult to find a head bobbing barely above the water from a kayak after you’ve gotten to their boat and figured out how to tow it back.
