romany speed?

Extreme? Old school
QCC 700 -faster, never corky or squirrelly - runs well light or loaded.

Epic’s a hair faster, surfs a hair better - but QCC a bit better all arounder. Anyone who doubts either for getting through some textured water - hasn’t paddled one in same.

Group speed
Has any of you ever participated in a sea kayak touring trip, where members have had trouble keeping up because of their kayaks?

Thinking back on many trips I can’t recall I have.

More often than not people have trouble keeping up but primarily that’s related to their paddling fitness level and secondarily to their less-than-efficient forward stroke.

Racing is a different beast.

slowest in first
Very slow people need to be in the front. Fastest in the back but here is a trick. Fast paddlers do a sprint loop around an island and then rejoin the group. As an old racer I must confess that slow, social paddlers might have more fun

Greyak, Extreme and Expedition
are 2 entirely different boats from CD.

I’m laughing, when
I want a work out I get into the CD Kestrel! Its like running with leg weights on (though I was surprised by how fast the kestel is)or the Acadia. When paddle camping and know its smooth water I’ll choose the QCC700. If its paddle camping and I know the water will challenge me I’ll choose either the Eggemoggin or the Nordkapp. If its paddle camping, challenging water, and maybe some greenland skills mixed in I’d choose the Q-boat…for speed and a work out its the Looksha II…

I think ultimately if you are a speed freek then you need a jetski or motorboat.

Typing vs. thinking - I’ve paddled both

Romany, slow?
Came into this late.

Pretend you are overhearing a coversation.

“I hear that boat is a little slow.”

“Ya, it’s slow, but not Romany slow.”

I will have to say the Romany/Poseidon designs are quite efficient at moderate speeds. It is when you push it, that it hits a wall before the longer boats.

But… it’s worth it for the handling hands down. And yes speed is a legitimate character trait.

Tom (had a Romany, now in a Poseidon)
