Safe or Unsafe

My vote is unsafe
Buy a copy of Deep Trouble and read it. That will certainly get you thinking about the possible outcomes.

Any boat without bulkheads and/or tied in float bags is not safe on the ocean in my opinion.

Trying to self rescue in a boat holding that much water is very difficult. A roll is not normally an option in that type of boat, and a Cleopatra’s Needle scenario is a definite possibility and extremely difficult to recover from.

intracoastal water way
Near moorehead city, nc is a great place to paddle and is quite sheltered I like hans on the paddle hydration system by platypus so you can drink without tipping.

What else do you need to think about

How about, is it a hot day. Maybe ther are local land breezes to keep you away.

Are you dressed for immersion. How cold is the water.

If you both go over can you rescue eachother in seas rough enough to cause the capsizes in the first place.

Maybe you can swim a mile, can your wife?

If you cannot practice rescues at the start of you paddle because tipping over would make you too uncomfy you are underdressed and should not be on anything unpredictable. Even on small lakes I still demand secure floatation front and rear.

I would notpaddle your boats on the ocean, i might in a protected harbor, there; you have my 2 cents.

Get lessons or instruction if you are paddling anything that is not totally predictable.
