Sea Kayak Recommendation

yes and yes

Took the Cape Horn on the lake Ontario today. That was actually for a kayaking class. I did the whole class in it, it was perfectly fine in about every respect. Others used rentals provided by as a part of the package and there was no difference whatsoever between me and the rest in terms of how the boats performed. I might even say that in some respects I liked the Cape Horn better, it seems to have a tighter and more regularly shaped cockpit and a lower back of the seat. People struggled to put skirts over their seats.
We practised paddling stokes and rescue. The boat felt quite natural right off the bat.
Thanks again everyone for invaluable assistance, truly truly appreciated! .

That’s terrific news, SS. Congrats!

It was a completely awesome experience, how come I didn’t get into it sooner in life. Especially living next to one of the great lakes. Ironically this is the closest water to my house, takes about half an hour…

I’m glad we could help steer you in a good direction. I’m also happy you’ve been listening to the repeated sage advice.

Challenge yourself, but take it slow and don’t get in over your head. Lots of time in the seat will pay you back.

Always respect the so called lakes some I have raced offshore boats on were really oceans in disguise. Have fun with the new boat.

Certainly. Lake Ontario at downtown Toronto area has break walls running along the shoreline making a nice calm corridor which seems great for practice.

It does indeed, but watch out for rebar and other “city” hazards. I’ve paddled at Sunnyside Beach on a few occasions and noticed a few things to be mindful of. Also, if you’re in the water a lot, see if you can locate some bacterial count information before you go. There’s a water treatment plant just upstream on the Humber River that dumps into Lake Ontario. After storms, these places sometimes have to dump untreated waste to handle the excess water.

@Sparky961 are you in TO somewhere? Where do you normally go?

I’m an hour or two north west of the city. I primarily paddle local lakes and Georgian Bay.

The extremely cold winters we had a couple years ago brought me to Toronto a few times because the lakes froze almost solid up here. Yes, I paddle year round. Make sure you research this very well before going down that road.

That boat and your body size and weight are a good match. What I predict is that if you take it out on a windy day without a rudder you’ll be doing some cussing. You’ll have to work and work to keep it going the direction you want it to go. Keep researching the rudder option.

Took it to lake Ontario today for a short paddle. The wind was probably 5-7 knots (according to Windy app) and at times I was recalling the skeg/rudder part of this conversation (the needing it aspect). I can certainly see now. It was not to the point of cussing, but at times I had to put a bit of a shoulder to it.

And a pic.

(Looks more open than it was, the shore was quite close on the right.

Beautiful! I really do like the color of your new Cape Horn.

Thanks

Great choice! Remember, you are almost invisible on the water, esp in low light, so watch out for the other guy
