from the dark side. Dedicated solos are hard to truly empty if they have tumblehome. Its hard alone in a lake to do a shake out or Cap flip.
Then getting into a boat that has a little water still in it and is unstable presents the usual result of introducing more water as you try to get over the rail and over you go…
But if you accept two things, it works. A paddle float and a double blade paddle. I have tried lashing a single blade to a thwart…too much time, unreliable hold.
You can reenter with practice with a stirrup entry ala kayak… and then bail the water out.
I say this because its like rolling…use it or lose it.
My son does it
I have no idea how. The canoe in question’s a big old heavy Coleman. He can push one end of it up into the air and flip it over so that it mostly empties itself of water–this in water over his head–and then he just grabs the far side and slides up and across, turns and drops in.
He learned at Scout Camp.
