Your wife’s preferences?
Forgot to ask above - if you are looking at a tandem to bring your wife along, what is her tolerance for being wet, or her comfort zone on choppy water, that kind of thing? If the two of you are quite similar there, a tandem makes sense. But if you are quite different in your comfort and desires about being on the water, you may be better off with appropriate solo boats for each.

Question, how many individuals do you want to get on the water at the same time? You could conceivably get a one person kayak, whether it's a SOT or SINK for yourself for solo journeys, then have the other be a tandem for the family, where you wife would be in the tandem with one child, and you'd be in the solo one.
