skeg?

The single fin
on a a single fin surfboard has always been called a skeg.

Completely agree with Bnystrom
as I pretty much usually do. But it doesn’t really matter what is actually making a given hull work, as long as it does for the owner.

When
I was a kid there was a mean lady living on our street. We called her a skeg.

Now
that we all grew up (except me, apparently) and paddle Brit boats we call her a rudder.

I thought a rudder…
I thought a rudder is where milk came from??

(Just joking!)

Happy Paddling!

Thanks for offering the necessary…
…caveat to what grayhawk and I were commenting on. Though it was not my intention to be so inappropriate as to attribute the handling of certain boats only to their chines, after re-reading my reply to grayhawk, I can see how, without providing the caveat you have, my words could have been interpreted in such a way as you seem to have interpreted them.

I suppose I could now launch into a long-winded discussion about both the endless subtleties and distinct differences between various hull design components, personal preferences, etc., but I’m feeling more like paddling than typing at the moment, so I’m getting out of here…now!

Thanks again for mentioning the obvious (I mean this sincerely, as I really should have mentioned it myself!).

Naw…
It’s where dings in your boat come from…
