Skin-on-frame vs. Kit (wood) vs. Folding

Design for your SOF?
Did you design/build your SOF yourself, or did you take a class?

I have Robert Morris’ book “Building Skin On Frame Boats,” which provides detailed instructions on building a SOF to your own body dimensions. I like this idea, since everything is built on your own body dimensions, and the process looks pretty straightforward. I am wondering, though, if it will be difficult to make some sort of steamer for the ribs.

book, Building A Greenland kayak. I used design features from other kayaks that I have paddled and the book also goes over many design features. The book is very thorough and goes into detail about each part of building process and the tools need. Making a steam box is no big deal. I found building a SOF to be much more enjoyable than building wood kayaks.

There is a great deal of information at the Qajaq USA website about SOF kayaks. By doing a search in the message forum you'll find a lot of information about a specific subjects. http://www.qajaqusa.org/

I put together a webshots album of the building process of my SOF. If your interested you take a look at it. http://outdoors.webshots.com/album/247090006OPNAiL

I’m 6’2" and 180, was 195 and have plenty of room in the F1. The Yost boats can be made for considerably less money than the F1 but you don’t have Brian keeping you on schedule and may spend too much time thinking.

It is a cool little boat and for something that seems like a rec boat in size, that is where the similarities end.
