I also name all my boats and otherwise decorate them. For one thing, as I learned back when I relied upon bicycles for transportation, thieves tend to avoid heavily personalized items:
A benefit of the gaudy cockpit covers is that I can quickly ID which one goes on which boat (all made to order) without having to inspect for small tags inside. Also, I got fed up with several times mistaking the conventional black nylon or neoprene cockpit covers I had with sprayskirts when I was grabbing gear for trips and ending up with a wet lap all day because I did not have a skirt.
I use outdoor furniture fabric with a webbing pull loop and marine grade heavy duty bungee run through a nylon tunnel to make a cover. Only costs about $4 worth of materials and about an hour of work.
