The Skeg / Rudder question...revisited

I knew what you meant.
I was just having some fun.

The rudder on my Summersong if helpful when paddling in big waves - I don’t have to lean that highly tumblehomed hull to turn when in large beam waves.

Underhull rudders
I have a Caribou with a skeg (up 90%)

I have a Kaskazi Dorado with rudder (up 90%) and I would prefer a skeg. The boat turns better without the rudder and tracks well enough until the wind gets above 15mph. There is a little advantage in controlling a drift with the rudder but that is fishing. A skeg would be easier to deploy and retract. Toe controls do help.

I have a Wave Witch Horizon with an underhull rudder and that is a different situation. It is a small boat with a lot of rocker and designed to be used with the rudder. The difference in the pivot point makes for a very quick turn and unbelievable control. For normal paddling I leave it tuned for tracking and use lean and strokes for course correction. It is not retractable and I had it made with half the normal depth so it would be more manageable meaning I dont have to get out in knee deep water. Fun little boat.
