Low-tech can be better. This is at an easier height to maneuver and less stuff around it (compared to the garage) for lifting and storing. We actually added a little bit of storage with the shelves. It’s also in a better location to prep for loading onto the Jeep.
The Canoe is extremely slippery on the plastic, so the straps are there just so it doesn’t slip off the edge. Plus, there’s always at least two straps immediately available. 
The shelves are pretty stable and, even though plastic, much more than sufficient to support the weight. I may still put a brace between the shelves to make it a bit more rigid.
Plus, the cats now have an extra area to explore. I’m waiting for them to go slip-sliding on top (the bottom) of the canoe. 
It’s indoors; out of the sun/rain/hot/cold, but out of the way and easy to get to. A win all the way around.
