NiMH battery life
As a general note, also remember that NiMH batteries can self-discharge up to 1% per day when not in use. There are some that have a much lower self-discharge rate(Sanyo Eneloop, for example), but they tend to have a lower capacity rating. For someone who uses & recharges infrequently, a lower-rated battery with a lower self-discharge rate might give more useful life than a higher-capacity battery that dies faster in storage.
Uniden
I got a Uniden and have been happy with it so far.

One feature that I like is that it can take AA batteries. As soon as I put it in an Aquapac it no longer fit in my PFD. Don’t understand the advantages of the Icom.
