Volvo C30 and sea kayak

Not sure of the exact figure
Is it a 12-foot spread? I’m not sure - that was my rough guess just thinking about it when I made that post. However much it is, it’s a lot. The front bar is way out over the hood, and I think the rear bar is over the glass of the back window. I’ve seen it sometimes when I’m on my way to work in the morning. When there’s been a boat, it’s been a long, very fragile-looking racing canoe. You wouldn’t want to put such a canoe on the 3-foot bar spread that you’d likely be limited to without an extender system.

an extremely high percentage of non resident rural drivers have no workable hands on conception of what they’re doing. Driving or otherwise.

They drive too fast, run outside on blind corners not slowing off course, play chicken with oncoming larger vehicles driven by country drivers driving slower than their usual speeds cause they have ID’d you as a flatlander, not pulling over to let the oncoming pass by when there’s no room for one vehicle ….just endless.

Running too fast on treadless hi mileage tires with the wrong pressures…lower pressure outback, prob a different balance.

Too fast coming off the Interstate onto rural lanes. Now experienced drivers after the 2 hour jaunt from city to country, you press on at Interstate speeds in a non Newtonian delusion.

Its just awful. Yawl like a drunk with a shotgun on the 4th.

Hatch?
Is the hatch on the C30 frameless glass like on the old 1800ES and, if so, are there issues with that whacking the boat when opened?

Regardless, not a bad looking car, although the Volvo I’d hold out for is the P1900 (really), no way to put a roof rack on that.

I gave up
I also wanted a Volvo C30. I already owned a V70 with Euro rails that I used a Thule cross bar on. I got about a five foot spread for fairly stable boat hauling. The Volvo website showed a set of Euro rails in the C30 photo section. Turns out they were not on a C30 and they don’t actually make them. After much research, I decided that the short bar spacing was a deal-breaker for me. I sometimes haul two canoes and it just did not seem up to the task. I bought another V70 and now own two. They are non-turbos and will usually run around 27 MPG. Not as snazzy as the C30, but solid boat haulers.

C30 owner here
I use the volvo factory system. It is the best roof rack I have every used. I have owned both Thule and Yakima.

I have topped two 18 foot, hardshell and SOF before on it.

They quit making the C30. Don’t often see them for sale. Good little hatchback.

Best.
