I use pipe insulation to pad gunwales so I can brace my knees. Handy stuff. Removable so that everything dries. For canoes, we have gunwale clips on the Yakima rack and don’t use padding. I used homemade cradles fabricated from conduit and padded with wool carpet for hauling fiberglass yaks. Not my design, but worked well.
