Katadyn vario
Just picked up one of these. Has two big pluses. Double piston pump so that you pump water on both the up and down strokes and a secondary ceramic cartridge that you can engage or not depending on the water clarity. From what I’ve read, most of the folks that have complained about it didn’t use it correctly. I’ve used one and had no issues.

MSR Miniworks EX for…
…the northwest coast of North America. Maybe not relevant for where you paddle.
Nothing very mini about it. Not elegant or cute. Pretty ugly, really. Utilitarian, I suppose.
Most BC water sources have tannin and the Miniworks does a great job without clogging too quickly. Many filters become liabilities before you get through 32 oz. It’s not a purifier but a filter so it gets the bugs out that we need filtered up here.
More like a case of poorly defined
marketing terms. That’s unfortunately what most of the verbiage is on these products. No real definition, just marketing hype and confusion.
