What is a camp knife?

A camp knife also requires a
Camp gun.

.357 unless you’re in bear country…

…then a .44 mag

Those two calibers because such a wide variety of bullet

types, weights, and loads are available.

If a long gun, a 12 ga for the same reason.

Gerber
Our description of a camp knife is one we will use almost entirely for food prep. I picked up a Gerber serrated fillet knife and it seems to be perfect for camp use. Very sharp, very lightweight, hard plastic sheath with built in sharpener, non slip rubber (?) grips, stainless. Cuts like a charm and only cost me $7 on Ebay.

Hi Bald, that’s quite a story about
Ka-Bar Corp. I have yet to get that kind of service from any company. Thanks.

Here’s what Hudson Bay Co. thinks

Then there is the Case Rio Grande camp knife.

A Couple
C2G described what I’d call a camp knife.

Check out Ragweed Forge:

See #C-173, and

See 5229-b, 5218, 5239. I’ve owned a 5229-b for a number of years and just love it. Very handsome tough and incredibly sharp and easy to keep that way.

Kellum has some very nice Scandinavian knives also. These in the wolf series look great.

Lastly I’d say look at the RC-4 and RC-6 from RAT Cutlery. Knivesshipfree among others will have them. They look a little tactical for the tastes of some but they are very functional and built rock solid.

K
That’s a fine starter knife. I think the design far outweighs the materials used to construct it. But AFAIC Bill Harsey is one of the top blade designers to ever live. You simply won’t find someone who knows more about his craft. My EDC is a Harsey folder made by Lone Wolf.

Nice History
Nice little write up and photo from Bark River to put this in historical context. Thanks!

Camp knife
This one may be appropriate!

Do yourself a favour
Ask her what she wants.

Camp knives and the definition depend on who you talk to.

Though none will make it through airport security my son carries a Swiss Army Knife to school (as did I) and it is not a threat, that may be considered a camp knife, (For camping).

We have a machete type affair we use when hunting as a common camp knife for cutting rope, hacking at a moose carcass, limbing branches, chopping tent pegs and splits for the fire etc.

Both camp knives, not the same beast.

Cool Knife Andy, how did you make it?

My Father made it
Blade was made from an industrial hacksaw blade.

I’m pretty sure that Jim Bowie
camped a bit, so maybe you should get her a Bowie Knife.

Jim

The real . . .
. . . Bowie knife was just a big kitchen knife . . . later embelished a bit.

SWAK
If you really don’t know what it is she’s after, then you can’t go wrong with a good Swiss Army Knife. The Huntsman model is my favorite, and it does 90% of what I need a knife to do while out camping.

If she’s looking for more of a kitchen knife good for camping, the Frosts or Moras are an excellent choice for that.

Speaking of Gerber
Does anyone remember the oldest Gerber knives? The ones with textured aluminum handles and thin blades? One of those would make a great “camp knife” IMO.

Jim

Ontario Knife Company Survival Knife
It is/was Air Force Issue Survival Knife. A couple inches shorter than KaBar, but much less expensive.

I have one in the truck. It really never gets used. I actually find the smaller the knife, the more it gets used.

My basic is the Swiss Army pen knife with blade, file, and sissors. I lose a lot of them. I leave them around and step son makes off with them, but they are only $10 at Walmart

A camp knife is the one…
you left at home. Vf
