Shred ready
ya those Shred ready helmets look good. Might look into those more.

A lot of people don’t have good things to say about them, but its worked for me. I’ve had this helmet since 2005, so it’s probably time to replace it (same with my PFD).

I’m an open boater, so I’m not hanging upside down, but rocks are still an issue in the event of a swim. The worst hit I ever took with this helmet wasn’t from a rock, though, it was from a canoe pole. I was on the Shepaug with Daggermat and Canoedad. The pole pinned, and then snapped back and whacked me on the head. I have gotten away from wearing my helmet when I pole, but I probably should put it back on.

p.s. - that Shepaug trip was great - its tough to beat scenery like this http://outdoors.webshots.com/photo/2843275420075003331uzkTwF

Have a t-dub, but there’s not enough
liner thickness to keep me conscious and self-rescuing after a hard hit. Some hockey helmets are better off in that respect.

Shreds seem focused on preventing a catastrophic depressed scull fracture, by having a dynamite shell. But in 35 years of paddling, I’ve never taken a hit that would challenge that shell and liner. What I need is more liner, to cushion blows that won’t break my skull, but will knock me unconscious.

Super Scrappy
Thanks for all the good input… I just ordered a Scrappy…

Hmmm…
I have not yet invested in a good helmet. Most people do though. Maybe I will change my mind once I really take a hard hit to the head, but I am not at all convinced that an expensive helmet really absorbs impacts better. It is just minicell foam – no magic is involved. It must fit and the strap must be strong and reliable.
