Not condescending
I don’t think it was meant to be condescending in the Kung Fu tv series. Simply a fond term for a student, like calling someone a young pup.



And I remember watching the tv series in its original run, not re-runs.

Condescending w/o malice




Condesending words also have a driving force. Every physical challenge has condescending names for those who desire to reach higher levels. These names remind candidate who and where they are and where they want to go. Being called a pup was condescending but in the end the reward was great.

When I’ve said it, I’ve said it with a smile, remembering my own experiences as a novice. I certainly don’t think of myself as a “master”.

Ah, brings back memories.
I think of the grasshopper as the eager learner. I’d consider it an honor to be called grasshopper.



At about month 3 I was on a lake in the evening. The water was like glass. I was practicing a sweep stroke. I started to imagine that I was the young grasshopper.



Master: “Ah, grasshoppa. When you can paddle without disturbing your reflection in the water, it will be time for you to leave this place.”



Me: “Dang, I should have brought a sleeping bag.”



Now I’m on to other skills, but still a grasshopper. And I still can’t paddle without disturbing my reflection in the water.
