Is The Battery Compartment?
It’s been quite a few years and things change, but my Etrex was touted as waterproof… except for the battery compartment. What kind of shit is that!!!

I have an etrex that has lasted a few years without being in a waterproof case. Usually sits on my sprayskirt and lately on a mount that sits on forward deck. I have had no issues with it not being waterproof. Only use it for speed/distance and heading settings while kayaking or canoeing. Originally bought it for backpacking trips because it is so light. But like to work on improving forward stroke technique and it helps to see a speed/distance feature.
If you want the mapping feature get the Garmin76 series. I have a friend who downloads the topo's on his etrex while on our paddling trips in coastal everglades and there are quite a few land masses that are not evident on these topo maps but show up on marine software. Suffice it to say, he's been lost a few times...
