You know why. 
Here’s a video of Boats on the Beach at today’s Clemson Paddle Jam at 12 Mile Creek Park in Clemson, SC. 71 boats competed on a 1 mile, 3 mile, or 6 mile course. There were many tandems (surfskis, outrigger canoes, and K-2), so I’m not sure how many total paddlers were involved. The race is part of the Southeast Paddle Sports Series.
The marathon racing canoe at the start of the video completed the 260+ mile Texas Water Safari. “The world’s TOUGHEST canoe race!”
It was very windy and choppy. A K-1 capsized twice. Shout out to Stacey F, who revived this old thread, for completing the 3 mile course on a 14 ft SUP. 
The winner of the 6 mile course finished in 47:29.
