I was paddling in Maine once, on vacation. A fog rolled in. As I couldn’t see jack (i.e., squat, not a paddling partner), I tried to keep the sound of waves breaking on the shore of the island I was circumnavigating on my left. Eventually, through the fog, I saw what appeared to be a house or similar structure off in the distance…maybe a quarter mile or so I thought. After I had paddled another 30 seconds or so, I realized it was a marker buoy that had been maybe 70 feet in front of me. With partial info, one’s brain can really go on a fantasy trip filling in the blanks.
