Canoeing yesterday in our tandem 17 foot stock canoe
My wife figured we averaged 16000 strokes and I called 1778 “huts” for a 25 miler
I won’t put the average speed or total time, but that goes in our log
For the data geeks in the crowd, there’s a kayaking app that you can install on a Garmin watch that will give you stroke count, frequency, stroke length, heart rate, speed, GPS position, air temp, etc…

But will it call a “hut” for me ? -That gets real old on a long trip !
I paddled the Missouri River 340 in a tandem canoe a couple of years ago and started to do the math for it. I realized pretty quickly that I didn’t want to know! It does make it a little easier to justify that new ZRE paddle when you figure how many tons of weight you AREN’T lifting when your paddle is even just 3 or 4 ounces lighter.

Why can’t you each count quietly and switch on a previously agreed upon count?
Note: I’m not a canoeist. It just seemed logical to me…

It would never work. Depending on the situation the count is just an average.
Sometimes 6, some times 8 and and sometimes more. The wind direction and speed changes things also. Some time if the wind is quartering and strong both paddlers might have to be on one side, and stay on that side. Needless to say either the stern paddler will have to do a rudder stroke (which will slow the boat down), or call a hut just for a break.
Also one paddler is usually stronger then the other and the boat will start to turn away from the side he/she is paddling on, so a hut should be called then to keep the boat going straight.
There is a whole lot more too in narrow twisty rivers that is too much to go into here, but makes it all fun !
I jot down my yearly miles biked every New Years. Someday I’ll figure up my pedal strokes.

It would be interesting to know the total life time miles on your bike ?
I gave up logging the bike miles many moons ago
127,796 since 1987. You’d think the knees would be shot but they’re still OK!

Thanks, I learned something today.
It makes paddling a single kayak sound pretty boring.
A guy in our group can give you every stat on every paddle he has done. He is also the mileage leader.

When I am in my sea kayak, I like that the best.
When I am in my little solo canoe, I like that the best
When I am in our tandem canoe, I like that the best
When I am on my paddleboard, I like that the best
I think you might like moving across water under your own power.
“Hut”. … So you called for 17k + in left foot strikes ? Thought you were paddling.

I did that when I used to do triathlons
when I use to race canoes, We switched side every 4 strokes. Stronger paddler never mattered. We never called hut…we found no need, {Just the way we did it YMMV} We also never talked…just raced.

We are not pros !
