Ok, i understand the concept, but lets say i only want to run the trolley line part way, what keeps it in position so that it doesn’t run all the way out?

I us two rollers in my home made system and run a half inch rope between them attached to a five pound weight. A slip knot works just fine.
Cleats
Generally, you install a cleat at or behind the hip to secure the line. You want the cleat in easy reach but out of the way. I believe both kayakfishingstuff.com and paddle-fishing.com have an article describing the installation of an anchor trolley.
