The “killing season” (or paddlers purge) begins…

-sing

:sob::sob::sob::sob::scream:

This is more of a problem in the Spring around the Chesapeake Bay. It’s the largest estuary in the US and has surface area of 4,479 square miles , but only an average depth of 21 feet. As such it warms and cools very rapidly. Winter water temperatures are some of the coldest for a large body of water. In the Spring it is fairly common to have water temperatures in the upper 40s and air temperatures in the 80s. It’s pretty common to see kayakers and canoeists out in jeans or shorts and a t-shirt in these conditions.

Some kayak and canoe rental operations open up in mid March for the Cherry Blossom Festival renting to people with no experience in small craft or knowledge of the dangers of cold water immersion.
