Souris River
I paddled the Souris River from the Hartney Dam to the Margaret bridge at the end of May 2003. The water was running over both dams (Hartney & Souris) by about 8". It was somewhat scenic but we must have encountered at least 60-70 Class I -II rapids over three days; most required scouting and were quite runable. A friend says that the rapids from the Margaret bridge to Wawanesa are even more frequent and more difficult. One place required a portage of about 200 yds, plus quite a few places lining the canoe was necessary. At alot of places there was no current and at others there was a good current. Places to camp for the night were readily to be found. My partner rather enjoyed the experience but I don't think I would do it again.
