Back Bands

I have a CD Kestrel 170T (17’ Tandom) The seat back that came with it is uncomfortable and tall causing my PFD to ride up. I was thinking about getting a back band but know almost nothing about them or what to look for. Thanks for any help.

Look for attachment points, how the new backband attaches. Having said that, don't be afraid to retrofit it and make some new attachment points, drill holes, etc. For me it was well worth it.

IR or NSI
IR Reggie or the NSI. I prefer the NSI whitewater model. I don’t drill all the holes and make all the contact points they specify.

Kestrel…
I put a SnapDragon backband in a Kestrel 120 and it was a great improvement.

Just about any backband would be an improvement over the stock backrest.

Made my own
using a 4 inch sheet of plastic, padded with ethafoam and neoprene. Works great, looks tacky.

Snapdragon
ditto for Snapdragon - I have one in my SOF and it’s quite comfortable.

had a great experience with Seairsports

Alecia went above and beyond and the products are great.

IR
When I inquired here last year, the IR won. I am quite pleased with it.

pillar
I don’t know if this would work for a tandem, but I replaced my back band with a pillar made from a three inch thick block of closed cell foam. It only presses on my sacrum, leaving my back to freely rotate with the strokes. I know this doesn’t sound comfortable, but I paddled for five hours yesterday and was perfectly happy with the set-up.
