We have a Katydyn base camp water filter that clogs very easily, with water that looks very clear. No big gobs of junk in the water. It uses the same filter as the Pur Hiker. Does anyone else have any problems with the base camp filter? We had two new filters. Thanks for your help.

The reason it ‘clogs’ easily is because you’re only using gravity to push the water through the filter element. There’s really not much pressure to speak of, except for the ‘head’ (the height of water above the filter element), and as the head decreases, there’s less pressure to push that water through. Gravity filters take a long time.
Pump filters can filter water longer before being cleaned because you’re using more pressure to push the water through. It takes more sediment to block the flow.
