If you are an ACA member
I think you get a discount on Subarus. Check into that.

Can’t go wrong with a Forester
I have a 2013 - factory rails and Tule bars. Mine doesn’t get great milage - 22 miles per gallon, but other than that it is the perfect paddling vehicle. I have a bunch of friends with Rav4’s - those are good too. Good luck.

Comments on 4x4, bed length

– Last Updated: Jan-22-16 9:17 PM EST –

Though I have four-wheel drive in my boat-hauling car, I'm the first to say it's a feature that's greatly oversold. For 24 years I've been using two-wheel drive mini-pickups for my work, and this work includes getting around on plenty of construction sites. I almost never get stuck, and I can guarantee that these trucks see far worse conditions than those seen by 99 percent of 4x4 pickup owners. The OP is open to 4x4, but recommending 4x4 as a matter of principle is overkill for most people, though you wouldn't know it by looking at what most people drive. One year I spent the entire winter and a couple weeks of the spring thaw driving to and from soil-testing sites on a large farm. That was brutal work, seven days a week, usually all day long, and then again every few hours all night long. That was a LOT of off-road mileage in snow and mud, and 4x4 would have been wonderful, but instead I threw on a pair of tire chains, which did the trick.

As far as those super-short cargo boxes that most four-door pickups have, it turns out there's a reason for that. Many modern garages have at least one parking stall that's not long enough for a four-door pickup with a six-foot bed. I USED to think a 6-foot cargo box on a full-size pickup was pretty darned small, until these micro boxes came along.

Year
What year was said minivan? How many miles did you have on it? I hope you find something new to you that you like.

do we smell bias ?

Those sportsmobiles are sweet
A little pricey though.

2003 chrysler town and country
155,000 I can’t say they were easy miles, lots of up and down hauling multiple boats.

Econoline
I have my Dads 95 Econoline with the v6 automatic transmission.mileage is not bad .clearance is great with running boards.and it did pretty decent during a trip to the Rocky mountains.for power and mileage.it fares pretty good on the back roads I have taken it on.would assume the 2000 and up models v6/8 would be petty decent choices and with long bars would most likely accommodate 4kayaks with a stacker system.

Down side is mpg not as good as other choices listed.and loading can be a challenge with 2 canoe or kayaks.more so with trying to set it up stacking.(a step ladder is a must with this van)and assume that work on it may cost a little extra because of where the engine and transmission sits. And with boats on top I can be interesting driving in high winds.

Upside is lots of room.nice ride and decent power.if you do proper maintenance.(fuel filters tune up ECT ) you should have few repair issues.80+percent of the repairs to his/my van.came as a result of him not driving much and taking for granted that its always about number of miles.and not number of years between certain basic/routine maintenance.regardless of miles.and the rest not that bad on expense. I do fuel and the other filters once a year.

If you can score one at decent price.its worth considering but have mechanic check it out first.if not buying new.

thanks for
your opinion but why have you arrived there ?

There's no one here I dislike nearly enough to steer them towards an Exploder.

online research vs. experience
There is a huge difference between having actual experience and doing online research. It seems someone here seems to think that online research is experience, which it’s not.

from stable ongoing organizations compiled into across the board averages is not old crank, nutgroup UFO in group advertising like we may find from Subaru boasters.

These facts are the opinions of many people with experience. No brake fluid is good for your hair, change the filter never the oil, nitrogen in tires doubles mileages.

Guttenberg telegraphy radio TV Internet...

? I doahn know. Just looking thru the post. Surprised Subaru sales equal Explorer sales. Never thought about that. Or other stuff the group brings up...then search for the material online.
