Best month to Paddle the Chesapeake Bay

I want to paddle about 200 miles of the Eastern shore, either starting from Havre de Grace or Virginia Beach. On this trip I will explore more and not do a direct point-to-point trip like last August. Many told me August was a bad month to do this because of the heat and flies. I can testify that both were issues last August when I paddled the Potomac to Havre de Grace.

I want it to be in boating season so I’m not totally alone out there. June 20 through August 1 is out due to previous commitments. What is best? April? May? Early June? August? September? October? I’m fairly flexible on those months. I would think that south to north on the Eastern Shore would take advantage of bay currents. True?

Thanks,

Pete

September

I sent an email response, but I'll throw one in here, too.

I'd vote for September. The water will still be warm and the kids will be in school so there should be a bit less traffic on the water.

Early June would be pretty with all the trees green, and you might get ahead of the worst of the bugs.
