Best tent camping near Portland Me?

My wife and I are taking a week to wander in Maine and Vermont. We plan to drive to Portland next Friday night.

We would appreciate any suggestions for a tent campground in the Portland area. And your favorite lobster roll place in the area, too.

No paddling this trip, I fear. My knee is still recuperating. This will leave more time however, for great diners and road food and National and State Park hopping.

We do plan to see Acadia and Thunder Hole.

Looking forward to your recommendations!

how close?
Depending on how close you want to be to portland, I love Hermit Island. But it’s probably an hours drive (gotta go east to go south).

around the corner..

Recompence Shore is a beautiful tenting area in Freeport.
BTW. Thunder Hole is over rated. The wind and tide gods have to be in alignment. I love Acadia but if I depended on the Hole I would have been disappointed..

Go over to the other side of MDI for quiet beauty.

My favorite lobster roll place is not on the coast. Dysarts Truck Stop outside Bangor.

In the Portland area its my kitchen. Two Lights Lobster Shack in Cape Elizabeth has a beautiful view but their food is overpriced. Open till the end of October.

My favorite pound is Five Islands in Georgetown. Reasonable prices.
