BWCA kayakers

Any suggestions for routes for a group of 6 experienced Fl. kayakers. We would like to paddle appx. 3 weeks in two separate locations.

Thanks

The BWCA regulations limit the number of boats in one party to four. So, you might need to bring tandems if you didn't plan on it.

The portages are pretty tough with kayaks, so look for a route that doesn't have a ton of portages. The new Trail Illustrated maps are a small enough scale for planning trips with a minimum number of maps(my review: http://www.paddlinglight.com/reviews/books-videos-movies/new-national-geographic-maps-cover-the-boundary-waters-canoe-area/. That'll let you see the portages easily.

I suggest doing something along the border to minimize portages and get some good distance. Going in on Sag and heading following the border all the way to Voyageurs National is a good option for kayaks. For the distance, the number and size of portages is small.

If you put-in on the Grand Marais/Tofte side, you also have Lake Superior to paddle. The Susie Islands near Grand Portage are excellent. If you have passports, just over the border is a chain of islands that you could spend a week kayaking and see something new every day.

BWCA has their own website/message forum with hundreds of regular BWCA paddlers on it…cant remember the url but just do a search.
