canoe camping upper shenandoah in virginia

I would like to take a trip sometime this summer up the shenandoah. Possibly putting in at Morgans Ford and camping on an Island, hopefully Burwell Island. Taking out at Locke Mills. I’ve gotten a little info from one article on Paddling.com but haven’t found anything anywhere, not even a drcent river map. We are just amatuer canoers wanting to do a leisure trip. I would appreciate any help. Thanks DMK

This is who I would ask. I’ve only used them to shuttle my boats once, but was very pleased with the people, price, and service. https://www.downriver.com/
They are in Bentonville, near Front Royal.

Looks like these guys are very professional.

I called downriver but they don’t have any clue about that section

You need to find “The Shenandoah River”, Blue Ridge Voyages Volume 4, by Matacia and Cecil. Long out of publication, I think it will be hard to find. Maybe try calling libraries in Fairfax or Front Royal. Chapters 10 - 12 cover your proposed route, with detailed maps and textual descriptions. The book is old, and rivers do change, but still, it would be a lot better info than nothing. Perhaps if you put a note on discussion page asking for info on the book or the authors, somebody in the community will help you find it.

It’s on Amazon! But what isn’t…

If the local outfitter does not know anything about the section you plan to run, there is a reason for it. Probably because the gradient is to high for most people. Stick to known runs.
