Canoe Repair

A fellow paddler was kind enough to give me her old canoe. The canoe is fiberglass, and has some cracks from when a large tree fell on it during a storm last year. I am assuming that these can be repaired, and will do some searching over the winter on the proper repair techniques. The question I have is this: In a few spots, the fiberglass seems like it is soft, almost like it is rotten. This boat has been stored outside in the rain and snow, could that have de-laminated some spots and caused the softness? How should I proceed with repairs?
