Canoe Seat and Yoke Replacement

Hello All,

I am looking to replace the original aluminum seats and thwart on my 14’ fiberglass canoe to wooden seats and a portage yoke. The problem that I foresee is that most new seat kits are mounted vertically through the inwale. This canoe wasn’t built like that. When they installed the original seats and thwart they just riveted horizontally to the aluminum inwale. Would drilling right through the gunwale and hull be a bad idea? I am planning on riveting custom seat hangers and custom brackets for a yoke, drilling right through and riveting seems like the only way to do it without completely replacing the gunwales. I have attached a picture of the seat so you guys can see what I mean.

Thanks
