canoe w/ trolling motor: dead man switch

I have a canoe w/ a trolling motor. I am in the process of adding a PWM speed control. Since this means attaching a metal box to the side of the canoe, I was thinking of adding a dead man switch (a switch that will deactivate the trolling motor if I go overboard.

I’ve already ordered the switch. The only reason I wouldn’t add it is so I can have the PWM up and running sooner rather than later. I wonder if the switch is a good idea. It’s a great idea for proper motor boats, but I don’t know about a canoe. It seems that if I go in, the canoe will capsize, and then probably won’t go anywhere.

any ideas? thanks.

I think it’s a good idea.
There are ways of tumbling out of a canoe that might leave it mostly empty and capable of motoring away.

thanks
guess I’ll add it then. thanks.
