Cartopping '07 Hyundai Sante Fe

Has anyone cartopped a kayak on a 2007 Hyundai Sante Fe? Did it ride well? How far/how fast did you travel? Any problems/issues?

This is the new style Sante Fe body with the molded in siderails and 2 factory cross rails with a maximum spacing of somewhere between 24 and 30 inches (I’ve got to double check the measurements). As this is a one time trip (not using my regular Nissan Frontier, the Sante Fe is the wife’s car) I don’t want to purchase any new saddles, etc…hoping to keep it simple with just foam pads, straps and a front and rear line. It will be hauling a 14ft rec boat for a little laid back lake paddling the week of July 4th. The boat weights in around 70 pounds or so and is 30 inches wide.

Experiences and suggestions welcomed!

Gee, it sounds like you would be fine
with that moderate load. Foam pads on the crossbars? If the crossbars seem cheezy, you coul add some wide foam pads putting some of the weight into the roof.

Because of the untried status of your crossbars, suggest you use bow and stern ropes down to your towing eyes.

Yep
Pads on the crossbars. The bow and stern lines are a definite.
