Rescued a lot of people ice fishing when conditions created huge ice floes.
Try getting Sector HQ in Milwaukee to authorize a bird when a boat’s going down on the Michigan side sometime…
One of our members was kayaking solo on the Potomac one winter in spite of many ice flows and some current. The wind shifted and he ended up trapped in the ice and unable to get back to the landing. After struggling a while he called the Coast Guard on his VHF. They sent out a boat, which promptly broke it’s prop on the ice. They then sent out a helicopter, but by them the ice shifted once again and he was able to get to shore by himself. They had to send another boat to take the first one under tow.
Moral of the story is to be very careful if paddling where ice may shift. I generally don’t do it. With thick ice the forces can be considerable.
