Coffee

OBVIOUSLY none of you are 5* paddlers
or you’d be drinking tea. Heathens.

How long
What kind of life are you getting out of the concentrate from the AeroPress, and what are you storing it in?

The AeroPress makes an incredible tasty cup of coffee.

Anyone know if there are other brands of concentrate in a bag other than Java Juice?

Aeropress concentrate
The Aeropress booklet recommends a “few days” refrigerated. However, I’ve had the concentrate along on trips of 9 days and it was just fine. We carried it in 32 oz. Nalgenes. (We took 2 32-oz. bottles on that trip by the way)

On most trips of less than a week we would start off with the bottle cold but even in hot weather it held up fine. Tasted good to the last drop!

When backpacking, we use smaller Nalgenes and try not to drink so much coffee but that’s when the iced coffee from a cold mountain stream can make the steepest ascent downright enjoyable!

PS It doesn’t hurt if you start with fresh Costa Rican whole beans.

Don’t be knocking orange peels.
grind them up , add coffee for a unique flavor.

Instant dried powdered coffee
No coffee grounds to pack out, no press or pot to pack in. I enjoy freshly ground coffees at home but not worth the clean up hassles and waste of fresh water on the river.

Ugh.
No offense, but I’ll go with the fresh brewed concentrate. I am particular about my caffeine.

mmm…mmm…good!
how about brining a coffee that costs $160/pound on your trip? this coffee supposedly has a rich, heavy flavor with hints of caramel or chocolate.

where did it get its “heavy,” “caramel,” “chocolaty” flavor, you ask? well, in sumatra, there are these little rodent-like creatures that live in the trees. one of their primary food sources are these coffee cherries. wouldn’t you know it, there are these pits in the cherries that can’t be digested, so they “pass thru” their digestive system and comes out as, well, you know.

now this is the part i don’t get: what the hell was the 1st guy to try this thinking??? hmmmm…ok, here’s a piece of rat turd, hey, i’ll put it in my hot water and drink it! come on! i sh** you not. google kopi luwak coffee and see.

now who’s gonna cowboy up and drink this, er, stuff?

Nalgene Coffee Press
Try the H2JO Coffee Filter, H2JO Press, or the Press-Bot Coffee Press. All three work by screwing them onto your existing Nalgene bottle. These work as good as the excellent aero press and have the advantage of being smaller and lighter.

I only resort to instant coffee when there is no other option. Also, Swiss Miss now makes hot chocolate with all the caffeine of a cup of coffee. It’s called Swiss Miss Pick-Me Up and makes a decent cup of mocha.

yum
Or you could just use cement mix for more flavor
