Connecticut River Camping

Just back from another camping trip on the Upper Connecticut River along the NH/VT border. This time, we did the section from Gilman, VT to Monroe, NH – three large reservoirs above the Moore, Comerford and McIndoe Falls Dams. Usually we canoe camp, but folks weren’t interested in portaging the dams (wonder why), so we set up a base camp at a nearby campground and did daytrips from there – worked out fine.

Nice. Haven’t been up that way in a million years. In my teen years, a bunch of us with rental canoes went out into the Moore Reservoir and found some secluded spot and camped for almost a week (yes, probably illegal but what did we know as city boys). I remember swimming and catching bass (but was not that into the paddling). It was the beginning of my interest in fishing and the outdoors.

Beautiful country.

Very well done! Thanks for posting. I enjoyed Jerry Vandiver’s song. It really captures the feel of the moment.

I have a song I made to play on my NAF flutes I make titled “Twilight’s Crescent Moon”. It was inspired one cool evening when I sat in a field as I exited the woods to watch the first thin sliver of the new waxing crescent moon drop slowly out of sight with Venus and Mars as an accompaniment to it’s descent.

There were a couple of bootleg sites on the VT side of Moore reservoir with unbelievable views of the White Mountains in the distance - like this.

I’m not big on lake paddling, but I have to say that I was pleasantly surprised by scenery and the paddling. I’d go back.

No Crescent Moon for us. In fact it was cloudy most nights and I never saw the moon, but the song does capture the moment.

Great photos, video, and trip report.
I’d love to do a trip with that crew; great menu of good food, some adult beverages, and fun companions,
Be willing to bet & give obscene odds that when that paddling crew gets together it’s a real “hoot”; especially if all of you get a “wound up”.
