I know that no whitewater exists in the greater Detroit MI area but wondering if anyone knows of somewhere to play in waves / light surf? I’ve heard this is possible on the western lake shore of lower MI, but just wondering if anyone has any ideas where this type of kayak play may be had nearby the Detroit area.
Thank you,
Dave

Just watch for the right wind and wave
combo and ride the Detroit River… I have lightly surfed off Sandpoint beach near Lake St.Clair and I mean LIGHTLY… there usually aren’t any huge breakers there but fun outside the restricted beach area sometimes.
Huron River
By Ann Arbor and Dexter has a few WW play spots. The AW page shows that it’s running now. Riverside will know about big water play options in the area.
Out of season
but if you aren’t opposed to a drive of a couple hours you should check out the East Race in South Bend Indiana. It’s a man-made whitewater course that runs at a class 2. It’s currently closed for the season but keep it in mind for next year.

We usually go out the North Black River in Pt. Huron. the river flows IN from the lake causing small rapids and on a good day Lake Huron has some great waves for playing in.
