HI friends, I have had kayaks for a while and recently got a SUP. I also saw a new type of rooftop kayak/ SUP carrier/ basket that seems very versatile. Wondering if anyone has tried it??
An interesting concept on the do-it-all basket.
I sure wouldn’t be loading my composite kayaks that way though. Looks like it would scratch the heck out of the gel coat and the rests for the kayak look like bare metal. I also wonder about making that pivot in windy conditions.
I would hope the foam is included as it shows with the SUP photo and would add it for the kayaks as well. Good questions about the windy conditions.
Probably fine for plastic rotomolded boats but even there the narrow unpadded crossbars would have a risk of oil canning the hull in hot weather.
Also appears to need at least factory rails and factory or add-on crossbars to mount making it an expensive option. Value added is questionable compared to what traditional rack manufacturers offer as options.
How wide is your SUP?, What kind of construction - kevlar, epoxy/glass, ABS, cheap foam/plastic etc? I would be hesitant to use the basket design as the SUP will have lots of minor side to side movement when you drive at high speed, this is harmless with a conventional padded rack cross-bar, but the thin basket with long sections of padding over thin mesh is a poor design and will quickly cut into the padding and then your board.
