Diff- Sweep vs layback roll

"sweep their paddle straight down … "
That is both a pulling down problem and an orientation problem. Guiding the paddle certainly helps in many cases. But pulling the paddle by rotating the torso and pulling down on the paddle with your arms are still completely different.

tis so
yep. little leverage as the angle decreases. This is similar to folks trying to brace with the paddle way forward or towards the stern.

Diff- Sweep vs layback roll
If I pushed down with my hands I’d be swimming and not hand rolling. Even in a hand roll it’s a hip flick and sweep with the hands.

Had a chance
to use the high brace out in some surf… works great!

I took several classes that each had a different approach … anyway it works well when I needed it…

tended to side surf more than the low brace but that was fun…

Part of it me getting used to a new Nord LV… that is really working out well…

good discussion!!

hip snap

Whenever I want to show somebody what the hip snap is, I rock my boat violently back and forth sitting there. If you do that and slowly lean back further and further, it gets harder and harder to do until you are way back (if you have the flexibility) and it's almost impossible. When you see a good white water paddler in a light small WW boat doing a strong hip snap C to C roll the torso is in a fairly upright position. You will never see that strict powerful jolt of a hip snap by anyone doing a lay-back style roll. Not in any video, demonstration etc. That's because it's almost impossible to do. Fortunately it's also not needed in that position and just twisting the boat with a little paddle assist is all that's needed. The same holds true for the forward leaning rolls. I have never seen in video or live a powerful hip snap on a forward roll. I don't mean bowing the head forward but a true forward leaning position. Try rocking your boat hard and gradually lean back or forward and you'll see for yourself. So in the forward and lay back position it's always more of a hip twist. Hip snap is one of the most over used, mis-understood terms in kayaking.

“For shorter bigger folks” only?
As a short AND light paddler, I too find the sweep roll more effective than a C-to-C.

Maybe It’s Just Me
but even when doing an ‘upright’ snappy C to C, my snap is much more powerful if the knee / thigh is lifting the boat as I flick the hips.

I understand that when I sit in a stationary boat and I lift a knee nothing happens. But maybe when it’s a part of the ‘paddle leverage’ it’s giving me more power.
