Early Start to Atlantic Hurricane Season

Invest 92L just upgraded to tropical depression (TD) 3. Projected to be a Hurricane Bret by midweek. And, right behind it, is invest 93L in what is extraordinarily warm water for this early in the season…

Got to brush back up my offside roll!!!

June really is incredibly early. September seems to be the month for the big ones to hit us here in NC.

Hoping for “fish storm” tracks and minimal landfalls. It is a bit concerning that they are reporting September water temps already in early June.

Invest 93 likely to morph to TS Cindy, Another possible tropical disturbance coming right on her heels.

sing

Officially, Invest 93 has become Tropical Storm Cindy. Looks like she is on a “fish storm” track running towards and along the SE Atlantic coast.

Southeast surfers will be seeing some swells from Cindy next week.

SwellInfo.com is forecasting pulses of long period swells in the 13 second range reaching southern New Enland by next weekend, courtesy of TS Cindy.

Looks like the RICKA surf and rockplay contingent will have something to play with on its scheduled July 1 outing. What to use… Sterling Progression, the optimized surfing longboat, or the Dagger Stratos 14s, with a more puncture proof RM hull for rockplay? From my one trip with RICKA contingent, I feel the group seems more inclined towards rockplay.

Looks like wind shear has really undercut TS Cindy. She’s a remenant low this AM and fading.

Mid Atlantic states are and will get surfable swells this week. Any leftover swells reaching New England for the coming weekend will be pretty small (although still better than flat!)…

Atlantic sea temps are still way above normal. So, it’s a matter (of less) time for the next named storm…

I would take a “Zombie Cindy”, especially if it is on a “fish storm” track that takes her by the NE!

I’m doing a strokes training at the Kayak Centre on Saturday. Ocean might be a little over my skill set anyway, but there is also a lot of rain coming, so the rivers will be up as well. We’ll see. I’d be OK if the training got rescheduled

Kayak Centre is by a small cove, tucked to the side farther up in Narragansett Bay. I doubt a southerly swell would reach that far up. May get showers but I doubt the lesson would be cancelled for that. We are doing a “wet sport” after all!

Looks like TS Cindy took a toll, even without landfall…

Would have to be TS Bret since this Beach is inside the Gulf.

A local connection…

I94 just become subtropical “fish” storm Don. He’ll hang around, almost in place, in the mid Atlantic for the next several days, not really developing much beyond tropical storm strength. But, it is enough to churn up the seas a bit. East facing breaks along the northeast Atlantic should be seeing some small but surfable longer period swells in the coming days.

Enjoy!

The forecast:

Got in some riding on 2’ 10 second swells this AM. Mellow fun time. Looking forward to more.

Swells from Don are showing up, albeit on the small side. Buoys are registering 2’ swells with a period of 17 seconds. Periods over 12-13 seconds are pretty unusual for the east coast!

Gotta make some time to get out there.

Here you go Sing - surfers at Point Judith.

I took this from the parking lot - I wouldn’t call them the baby waves, but the big stuff is out at the point, and I was too lazy to climb over the rocks to get there. Nice to see at least one old guy out there - no long boats though.

Big waves yesterday - they pulled people from the water at East Matunuck and Misquamicut for a while yesterday.

Nice! Pt Judith is a legit point break that can compete with the best of them on a big day. Unfortunately, it’s crowded as heck too! Surfed it once and that was it. Too long of a drive for me to get there and then to “compete” for waves with the young ones.

Sticking to my less optimal reef and point breaks near me.

Keep those swells rolling in!

I’m actually hoping things calm down a little so I can get out in the bay.
