They’re off
Is the WT tracker working for you? I can’t get it to load.
I got the raceowwl site to work. Looks like they have great weather on the start
Glad they have good weather but was saddened (and angry) to read that some scum stole a Triber’s Yeti cooler and food box containing his cardiac and diabetic medications, so he’s had to scratch.
What a disappointing thing to happen. Taking away much more than an expensive cooler and meds, but also a dream.

Quoting from WT’s FB:
“Race update for MolaMola…
Just heard from Brooke who is just approaching the second Sarasota bridge. Other than the frustration is mostly headwinds, she’s in good spirits and feeling good. Stopped for a bite to eat then pushing on for a late arrival at CP1.”
Winds have been about eighteen out of the East all day here in Key Largo. The sailboats have it easier than The Kayaks as ALL the ducks have to line up for the kayaks.
Greg (kayakvagabond) should be arriving at CP1 momentarily.
Always fun to watch the elite paddlers reaching checkpoints before some of the sailors.
I’ been checking in and watching their progress.
Hey Mola Mola, fun to watch your progress! Has that sail been helpful yet? Met you yesterday (Fri), one of the bikers to stop and wish Andy and Mary (and you) a bon voyage!
It did this morning
Still can’t get it to load. At least Race Owl is kinda working. The distances some of the paddlers have already traveled is mind boggling. Gotta have a high pain threshold. And flawless technique.
I’ve had trouble w/ it off and on but I have it up now.
Bump…
Hey everyone - I made it to the Manasota bridge yesterday at about 130 and called it quits. The wind at that point was 15-20 with higher gusts right on the nose and I had 17 miles to go until the next place where I could camp. I was having some back and wrist/hand issues from all the hard paddling so didn’t feel safe to continue. Everyone is having a tough time and most people who are still out there are at least a half a day to a full day behind where they would like to be. I’ll post some photos later but just wanted to let everyone know that I am Ok.
Sorry to hear you had to drop out, but glad you’re ok.
Headwind and tide combos sure were tough for some SUP and kayak paddlers and even sailors.
Read one account of paddling in place for an hour because of conditions and another whose normal average speed is 5 mph struggling to achieve 2 mph. Even though the CP1 deadline was extended to 6 pm, it just wasn’t doable for quite a few.
Greg Stamer (a paddling Ninja) is approaching CP2, Chokoloskee.
Props to all of them.
I followed you and some others right alongI’ll be curious to read your account and a few pix when you rest up!
Bummer about the conditions, Brodie. A tough decision for sure but you’re smart to listen to your body.
Strong headwinds are frustrating, exhausting, and take all the fun out of paddling.
