so is anything with a blue screen. I note

Anything in excess is bad for you… Yes FB was designed to keep you there and if you are naive you are apt to find its not good for you. But I don’t spend 50 min a day on it

I spend 10 -20 some days zero. Someone pissed me off and I was off for 8 or 12 months

I am a millennial and have to be one of the only ones not on Facebook. I mostly avoid it because I hate how much extremely intrusive tracking and data mining they do. Also, I dont like broadcasting my life for all to see. A lot of my peers are in a contest for who’s coolest (on facebook) in a narcissistic ‘look how cool my life is’ sorta way. Look, im happy for you that you’re happy and all, but I dont care about your regurgitated politics, the 1000th picture of your kid in the last week, or whatever over populates your timeline. I just prefer to actually talk to my friends I guess. Does that make me Old?

Narcissism aside, facebook data mines every aspect of your life, the websites you visit, the links you click on, your interests, friends, contacts, ect, all so they can sell you adds.

If you’re not clearing your cookies upon closing your browser, most websites can tell every page you’ve visited and every product you’ve looked at since you cleared them last. Tho I have my browser set to clear cookies upon exit, FB and other companies can still data mine a lot of info from you and there is little you can do to reduce your exposure.

That said, I have a dummy account to notify me of facebook-only deals from some local shops, and keep track of a couple interests like paddling of various types. Its a useful tool, but I think people way over share and under protect from data mining.

Facebook, like pretty much everything in life is what you make of it. I started on Facebook from pretty much the beginning and have reconnected with frends from high school and college through it. In many cases it is simply seeing their posts and what they are up to and reacting to them if I find them interesting. In a number of cases it enabled me to rekindle friendships. Thanks to Facebok I went fishing with an old college fraternity buddy who I hadn’t seen or made contact with in decades. Sure, I may have done that the old fashoned way with a phone call provided I still had their phone number from decades ago. Facebook provides an easy way to find old friends.

You can choose to share as much as you want. If you don’t want to share much, set or your privacy settings tightly. You can choose who to follow and if their posts annoy you, you can block them or simply “unfollow” them so they are not in your feed.

After my divorce I left my Facebook page completley open in the event that an old love of mine would some day check out my page and contact me. As far as I knew she was happily married and I assumed that she assumed the same of me. Guess what, she did.find me through Facebook and we have been dating for two years and are about to be married. It started when she opened a Facebook account and out of curiosity searched on my name.

Bottom line you can choose your “friends”, ditch them if they become annoying and you can have anything you write or pohtos you post limited to a small group (your family for example), a single person, or anybody… Again it is what you make of it.

Of course Facebook (just like Google) collects your data to place ads that they think might be interesting to you. The ads are relatively unobtrusive and you can simply scroll past them.

But one key thing is that many activity oriented groups have eliminated web pages in favor of Facebook pages or at least moved their forums off their sites to Facebook . Website Internet forums such as this one tend to be dying, in favor of more specifically focused Facebook forums. For example if you are interested in canoeing in Arkansas, you might find something like this https://www.facebook.com/groups/375435539319920/about/
