Looking for information on floating the Clarion River to fish for Smallmouths. I’ve paddled the river several times with family but looking to do an overnighter or weekend to fish for Smallmouth Bass. From what I’ve read, the section between Cooksburg and Piney Dam is good. Not looking for “hotspots”. Just want to take a friend downriver fishing and trying to decide on starting at Ridgeway vs Cooksburg.

It's a little over 12 miles from Cooksburg downstream to Millcreek and the last two miles (below Blyson Run) will be flat water in the backwater of Piney Dam. So maybe not long enough for a weekend float. Also much of this section below Gravel Lick is privately owned so camping may be an issue. There are numerous access points upstream between Cooksburg and Ridgeway, so finding a length of river to suit your timetable shouldn't be a problem. Most of the river in this stretch is publicly owned...Allegheny Nat'l Forest on the north shore and State Forest on the south. All great for smallmouth and a beautiful run.. May and early June is best. Have fun!
