Has anyone paddled the Frost River in the BWCA? I’m looking at getting a new canoe in a couple weeks and taking it down the river for it’s first trip. Can anyone tell me what to expect, especially how the portages are?
It is a very demanding route, which is more portage than paddle. You will be constantly dragging your brand new canoe over beaver dams and transition in river elevations…maybe use your old canoe for the Frost River trip. Don’t get me wrong…Frost Lake is probably my favorite lake in the BWCA…awesome fishing and very nice camp sites, but the river is brutal. Start at daybreak and you will make camp late afternoon every day, get in shape and keep the packs light. Good Luck!
