Honestly I don’t know how much time I will have but there may be an opportunity for an extra day where it seems the conference I’m attending may not really have much of a last day. I have googled for kaying in that area and not too much came up. I’m also a beginner which is sort of limiting.
Just double checking on the off chance that there is a nice little lake with some fingers or slow little river and a place to rent and I get the time.
Thanks
Tims Ford Lake
is about 45 minutes from Huntsville in Franklin Co TN. It is an impoundment of the Elk River, so it is “riverine” in nature. It has quite a bit of motorboat traffic, mostly fishermen. I used to live on it.
The Elk River downstream of the dam (flowing west) is also worthwhile and is a Class I float if you can arrange a shuttle. If you are interested and want more info, send me an email.
Couple of places
In Huntsville itself, there is North Alabama Canoe & Kayak (NACK) http://www.nacktrips.com/
Outfitter, good folks
The Elk is also a good paddle and Elk River Canoe Rentals can help you there. But it is about an hour’s drive. http://www.elkrivercanoes.com/
A very good friend of mine, Randy Griffin lives in Huntsville and he loves to take folks out. Let me know and I’ll put you in touch with him.
Welcome
I work in Huntsville and I am currently the Cruisemaster I for the local canoe club (HCC). Basically I help lead and organize lake and class I trips. Let me know when you’ll be here and we’ll try to work something in. There are regular lake paddles on Wednesdays, (Wheeler NWR), Thursday (Lake Guntersville), and Friday (TN River near Ditto Landing).
And the weekends are always good – unless it’s coming up a storm (like this coming weekend). We’ve had a string of cancelled weekend trips, so there are quite a few folks itching to paddle and I’m one of them.
Hope to see you soon!
Jim
And I’m sure we can hook
you up with a rec boat for a day. Randy (mentioned above) has a small fleet of boats, I have a few, and I have friends… Zip me an email and we’ll talk.
For wildlife, it’s tough to beat Wheeler NWR and the Guntersville Area (i.e. Short Creek).
