Some pics of my new to me necky looksha that I picked up for $300 from a farmer who also gave me a dozen eggs…
I have 2 friends who own Lookshas (two 4s and one 5) and I have paddled them all. In fact I have one of the 4s for sale right now. All have been very good kayaks and handle very well, are fast, and turn well when edged. They also hold a lot of gear so for multi-day trips they are wonderful.
I bet you’ll like it
Looks nice, I didn’t know you did that type of paddling, just swamps, rivers and rapids.
What is the Modular?
The modular is the pakayak. Real handy for long RV trips and up to now my fastest flat water boat .
You mean it is serviceable? It looked like a collectors item collecting dust. I thought pak-yak was a foldable.
Thar looks like an older boat, I did not know Modulars were out that long.
New boat day is always a good day!
I do not know if you realize this or not, but the whole sequence you laid out in the post on Tariffs that you rightfully said would take 7 years or so and people want instant gratification, is playing out right before our eyes in a very accelerated fashion exactly as you described it including the uplifting of developing economies and the isolation of China with many others willing to take their place. Very Accurate…
Thank you mjac.
Facts…
I have paddled one they are fast and make a good touring sea kayak, and that was a great deal.
That was a really good deal. I paid $600 for a Looksha of similar vintage for my brother 10 years ago. He’s gotten a lot of use out of it. The vintage Neckys (and Daggers) are really rugged boats if you can handle the weight.
well now I just have to learn how to use it. I signed up for the western michigan sea kayak symposium.
How much money?
more than the $300 boat!
Jesus, what is it with these instructional fees? That is why I asked, I was curious.
I don’t begrudge the fee structure for the symposium. I didn’t sign up in time for the class that leads to certification but I’m sure I will learn plenty. I will approach it from a growth mindset. Instructors have to take and pay for classes to become certified to teach. They also have to regularly take and retake first aid and cpr. They have to recertify with abbreviated classes every few years from an instructor trainer. I haven’t met anybody who really does it for the money. Informal and formal settings can both be beneficial. I’ve got more bad habits than most and am not the easiest student to work with.
well i finally got the “new to me” lookshaw boat out for the first time, pretty much what I expected- trickier to get in and out of than my ww boats, felt more stable once I got it moving, much bigger turning radius! I don’t really like the seat back and I need to secure it so I don’t lose it but it makes getting in more difficult and isn’t really keeping me in a good upright position. I’m thinking about cutting and Uing some pool noodles for support instead and maybe later a backband. Currently I’m in pittsburgh to go to my first funk concert- George Clinton and then onto the symposium in MI. I managed to push on the peddles too far down the boat and then couldn’t reach them with my feet. I have some adjusting/outfitting to do which I generally suck at but it is part of the process. The good news is that it was easy for me to engage my knees. The boats seems to be a good depth for me, and overall a good fit.
I first read that you were going to your first punk concert and thought “heck yeah!” and remember some shows I’ve been to. My first big name non basement punk show was in Toronto and we were all 19… back when you could cross the MI/CAN boarder with a COPY of your birth certificate. Then I re read it and saw it was funk and smiled because the experience is definitely different. But 100% a fun time.
The boat… good buy at a good deal. I think once you get the hang of it you’re going to have a lot of fun. What town is the symposium in? We have a few in the northern region but sometimes the guys who run it charge a lot more than $300. I think they use the backdrop and hot destination to their advantage. Good teachers though.
Enjoy the new kayak
